Much, many, and a lot of: how do you choose?

The whole rule in four cards

Blue means countable, orange means uncountable, green is the universal a lot of, and purple shows where much and many fit best.

YOU CAN COUNT IT

You can count them: one book, two books; friends → many (or a lot of).

NOT COUNTED ONE BY ONE

You do not count them one by one: water, time, money → much (or a lot of).

NATURAL CHOICE

Not sure? Use a lot of — it fits both.

REMEMBER

much and many feel most natural in questions and negatives: How many...? We don't have much...

Infographic: many with countable nouns, much with uncountable nouns, a lot of with both
First choose a row: count separate things (many), but do not count water, time, or money (much). A lot of works in both rows, while much and many are used mostly in questions and negatives.

Count one by one

Many or a lot of? Compare them side by side

Both words go with things you can count. The difference is not the meaning but the style: many sounds natural in questions and negatives, and a lot of in ordinary statements.

YOU CAN COUNT IT

MANY — handy in a question or a negative. Do you have many books? I don't have many friends here.

NATURAL CHOICE

A LOT OF — natural in a calm statement. I have a lot of books. She has a lot of friends.

Do not count one by one

Much or a lot of? Compare them side by side

Both words go with water, time, money, and other things you do not count one by one. Again: much for questions and negatives, and a lot of for statements.

NOT COUNTED ONE BY ONE

MUCH — handy in a question or a negative. How much time do we have? We don't have much money.

NATURAL CHOICE

A LOT OF — natural in a statement. We have a lot of time. They spend a lot of money.

Common mistakes

Three mistakes that are easy to avoid

Look at the English noun, not the translation. In English, money and information are not counted one by one, but friends and mistakes are.

NOT COUNTED ONE BY ONE

Not much friends. Say many friends or a lot of friends — you can count friends.

NOT COUNTED ONE BY ONE

Not many money. Say much money or a lot of money — money is not counted one by one.

NOT COUNTED ONE BY ONE

Not much informations. Say much information — information is uncountable and takes no -s.

What to do next

One last time: books, friends, and mistakes can be counted, so use many; water, time, and money cannot, so use much; a lot of fits everywhere and is especially good in calm statements. Keep much and many for questions and negatives.

Two questions, and the right word is already in front of you.
