Editorial
The cards, lists and comparison pages on this site are prepared by the Vastny Languages editorial team. Here is where the words come from, how every card is checked and how to report a mistake.
Every word comes with audio, an image, a transcription and an example in context, and flashcards bring it back exactly when it is about to be forgotten: hard words more often, familiar ones less. The goal is to stop translating in your head.
English word frequency is taken from the open academic NGSL (New General Service List): the "5000 words" and "top 2500" lists are built on it. CEFR levels A1–C1 are assigned by frequency and topic.
The base currently holds 11,608 words, 224 themed lists and 51 "what's the difference" explainers (as of 19 October 2026).
Each card has one sense anchor: the translation, the example and the hint must describe the same meaning. Homonyms get separate cards; clarifications go into the hint, never into the word itself. Checking runs in two independent passes and every decision is logged. In September 2026, 2,284 examples were corrected and 3,005 mismatches between British and American strings removed.
English words have British and American audio and IPA transcription; German and Russian words are recorded separately.
We do not publish unchecked machine translation. Stylistic variants are marked as variants, not errors. Cards are corrected when readers report a problem.
Write to us through the contacts page with the word and what exactly is wrong. Corrections go live after a check; the update date is shown on the page.
